Dog Food Information
Flint River Ranch, BARF and other related
articles......
Why isn't Flint River Ranch sold in
pet stores? Mass marketing requires
aggressive national advertising, which is very expensive.
The FLINT RIVER RANCH Company capitalizes on the marketing
skills of its independent distributors. By letting the
distributors market the product their own way, the company
saves money on national advertising. This savings can be
passed on to the consumers in the form of a much higher
quality food at a very affordable price.
Is Flint
River Ranch more
expensive?
Absolutely Not! You will actually realize a savings on
Flint River Ranch, with fewer vet bills. You will feed your
pet 20 to 25% less of Flint River Ranch than other brands
because it is so concentrated. You won't be wasting money
on non-digestible fillers like peanut hulls and sawdust. Of
course, fresh, organic chicken and range fed lamb costs more
than road kill and diseased slaughterhouse animals (which
find their way into most commercial pet foods). Also, you
will not be paying for water (which makes up about 75% of
most canned pet foods.) You will never have to waste time
and gas running to the store to buy your dog or cat food.
Flint River Ranch ships your order for FREE directly to your
door via United Parcel Service.
What is the shelf life?
Five months is the recommended shelf life for Flint River
Ranch. Most commercial dog foods contain harsh chemical
preservatives so they can sit on a store shelf or in a
warehouse for months on end.
FLINT RIVER
RANCH
contains no chemical preservatives. It is made in small
batches and shipped fresh to your door.
How will I know how much to feed my
pet? Each bag of dog or cat food lists the
recommended amount to feed your pet. Food requirements vary
depending on climate, breed of pet and exercise activity.
Flint River Ranch is best introduced by mixing with your
pets' current food for one week and allowing for slow
assimilation as its normal diet
How should I store this food?
Flint River Ranch recommends storing the food in the
original bag in a sealed container. By doing this will
ensure that no old food remains in the bottom when you add
new, fresh food to the container. Remember, Flint River
Ranch is all-natural and it is best to keep the food in a
cool, dry place. Do not place food directly on damp
basement or garage floor.
How is the food packaged for
shipping? The largest bags are 20 pounds.
When you buy 40 pounds, you will get two 20-pound bags for
easier storage. Flint River Ranch packs each shipment
securely in a heavy duty corrugated shipping box.
My pet is a finicky eater. What if
she doesn't like it? We offer a 100%
satisfaction guarantee. If you don't like the food, just
send back the unused portion in the original bag for a
refund. However, one of the unique properties of this food
is its palatability. The most fussy eaters have been known
to eat this food like every meal is "treat time".
Keeping Your Dog's Teeth Clean by Dr.
Pitcairn DVM - "In the natural state, carnivores do not
develop calculus (tartar). Domesticated animals, in
contrast, are not eating their natural diet and the softer
food accumulates on the outside of the teeth in an area
where it cannot easily be cleaned off. It is familiar to us
that we can put our tongue in between our teeth and the
inside of the cheeks to clean out accumulated food. Dogs and
cats cannot do that as their teeth are too sharp. In the
natural state, carnivores keep the outside teeth clean by
gnawing on bones, a process you can still see with both dogs
and cats accustomed to eating bones. If you observe the
position they take, you will see that they use their side
teeth in a sliding motion along the bone and this scrapes
off any residue left from eating. The obvious solution to
the problem of tartar accumulation in domestic animals is to
give them bones to chew on. In my experience this is the
most effective method and, for many animals, will clean the
teeth to perfection."
Condemned parts and animals
rejected for human consumption can be rerouted into
commercial pet foods. These condemned parts are referred to
as the 4 D's: dead, dying, diseased or decayed. We believe
this is one of the most despicable practices in the pet food
manufacturing industry.
Some
manufacturers have a lower standard regarding the quality of
ingredients they use to make pet food. A recent example of
this practice is the discovery of Pentobarbital in major pet
foods, including supermarket brands.
Pentobarbital
is a chemical used to euthanize animals. Many holistic
veterinarians feel that daily ingestion of pentobarbital can
be harmful.
Many manufacturers cut costs by using the
cheapest ingredients available at the time a food is made.
Since costs rise and fall, some manufacturers will vary
ingredients from batch to batch .. resulting in changed
nutrient values for each batch and possible digestive
illness.
The best guide to
feeding dogs is to think about what they would eat in the wild,
and then to try to reproduce that as closely as possible with
the ingredients we have available. Wolves eat whole animals,
from mice to caribou, and supplement their diets with other
things that they find, like over-ripe fruit that has fallen to
the ground, grasses, seeds, nuts and vegetable matter. Very
little grain would be found in the diet of a wild carnivore, and
they would avoid the moldy, toxin-ridden grains that comprise
the majority of commercial pet foods. Despite the fact that
there is no evidence showing that dogs & cats require
carbohydrates in their diets, that is what makes up most
commercial foods.
These are the
myths:
1. The digestive system of modern
dog is different from that of his ancestors and therefore must
be fed differently.
2. Dogs shouldn't eat bones and
other raw foods.
3. All dog food should be cooked.
4. You need a university degree in
dog nutrition to feed a dog.
5. The best way to feed a dog is
with commercial dog food.
6. Each meal you feed a dog must be
complete and balanced.
What about a balanced diet?
Here's what Randy Wysong, DVM
has to say about a "complete and balanced diet":
"A 100% complete processed diet
requires:
1. 100% complete knowledge of food.
2. 100% complete knowledge of
nutrition.
3. 100% complete knowledge of #1 &
#2 requires 100% complete knowledge of every science.
4. Since #1,2 & 3 are not possible,
the 100% complete processed diet is a myth."
So, even if the bag says
"complete and balanced", it's not likely that is what your
feeding your pet. The truth is, though, that the body knows what
it needs. If you supply variety in the form of a species
appropriate diet, you do not have to concern yourself about this
aspect of feeding. Balance is achieved over time, not in every
meal or even every day
Can I feed a
combination of BARF and commercial foods?
The purists would tell you that you
can not, because cooked, grain-based foods are digested at a
different rate from raw foods and you will create digestive
upsets if you try. I believe this is not good practice because
I do not want the raw food to remain in the gut or intestines
any longer than they need to be (risk of bacteria growth) But, I
know of some who do and have never experienced problems.
Some people
transition from commercial foods to BARF by alternating meals or
days. There is no hard and fast rule. Do what works for you and
for your animals.

How Much
Should You Feed Your Dog? At A Dr. Billinghurst seminar when
he was lecturing in the USA in 1998, he answered this question
by showing a slide. One side showed a drawing of a dog with her
ribs sticking out. Under this drawing it said, "Feed More". The
other drawing on the slide was that of an extremely obese dog
and the caption said, "Feed Less." This is the simplest way to
decide: let your animals tell you by how they look and feel. A
healthy dog should have just the hint of visible ribs. For those
who need figures, 2-3% of body weight has been suggested for
adult dogs with 6 to10% for growing puppies.
